The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012) - ENG

The Broken Circle Breakdown, ladies and gentlemen.

Rate: Diamonds & Bluegrass.

We are continuing the AmericanOdyssey, hoping that conspiracy theories will prevail and win the final battle – since in real life this is what happens – but at the same time we support US Force lady OdelleBallard (aka AnnaFriel) to reach her own Ithaki. News of the week: 2nd season trailer of TheStrain which probably will be our summer’s favorite cocktail.

This is another ENG review, and there is a reason for that. 5CityMan reached 100 posts (actually this is the 101st …) and as a small sample of my appreciation I would like not to bla-bla-bla-bla-bla-bla a lot but to say a couple of things for (probably…) one of the best movies I’ve seen for the last 3-4-5 years.

TheBrokenCircleBreakdown is a European film (from Belgium with love…) nominated for many awards (Oscar included…) and we don’t care if it won only a couple of them (Oscar not included…). Maybe this was for the best, since I have no words to write (but I will anyways…) for this masterpiece and the plot which involves 4 humano-elements of a life’s perception: music-love-paradise-hell

People usually find during their lifespan 1 of the above, and that happens only if they have the basic concept to understand what is happening around them (it’s called brain and the ability to use it…). If you are very very lucky in your life, you may have crossed 2 of them. Living and experiencing 3 of them is like free-falling from the upper layers of the atmosphere. The ride is really nice but it does not last. The total package of all 4 of them is the “real deal”, the one and only challenge, the total adventure where eventually the destination does not really matter, but the whole journey is the essence, its experiences and its educational outcomes. The real prize is not to reach the finish line, but to ride along, and to be aware that you are riding along (just like an Odyssey!!!). Of course, the question still remains: What is happening after the end of the journey. Well, this is for you to decide.

TheBrokenCircleBreakdown is an odyssey for Didier (aka JohanHeldenbergh) and Elise (aka VeerleBaetens). Didier is a musician and his bluegrass (panjo-jewish spoiler alert…) band slowly starts to become popular. Elise on the other hand is a tattoo artist, but when she also discovers bluegrass, she will join Didier’s band and they will be ready to live glorious moments. At this point we 've already seen in action ¾ humano-life elements.

Didier and Elise have a daughter, sweetie little country rock-star named Maybelle (NellCattrysse). At some point Maybelle gets sick and the couple will have to put all their efforts and powers to walk on a difficult and soul devastating path for Maybelle‘s sake. But what will happen if the ‘artistic’ couple realizes that life is not art, that people think differently and react to same situations even more differently? This is the 4th and final humano-element.

The movie is a top AAA class for your eyes and your ears too, due to bluegrass. 1 hour and 47 minutes of pure life and panjo sounds. At the 44th minute the art of life is broken and then we have to struggle all together to move on. Will the circle be unbroken?

Bonus: Your Bonus is watching a very nice film. A family drama actually with Didier/Johan and Elise/Veerle being absolutely exceptional. Mr. Felix van Groeningen did it again. eeeehaaa!!!

Moral lesson / Precept: An odyssey is a long and difficult journey. Life is a long and difficult journey.

We liked: Yeap.

Should I watch it? Yes, for sure. If you have small kids or if you are expecting a new member to join your family soon, I was told to advise you that you should probably not...

Memorabilia
Hi, cowboy.
Maybe I don’t want to make decisions about someone else’s life.
Hey Alabama…may I ask you something? Who am I? If you are Alabama, who am I?
I am a monkey. And I’m scared.
I’ve covered up your name Didier.
That it was too wonderful to be true. That it couldn’t last. That life isn’t like that, life isn’t generous. You mustn’t love someone, you mustn’t become attached to someone, life begrudges you that. It takes everything away from you and laughs in your face. It betrays you.

Alternative Title:
Alabama Monroe.
Bluegrass rocks.
A bluegrass fairy tale.
A bluegrass love story.

ps: This post is dedicated to all of those who left us much sooner than they should. They abandoned us leaving behind such an unspeakable loss and a burden full of hopes that one day we will meet again, drinking, laughing and remembering all the good times we had together. Past, present and future - all combined - will not matter anymore since time will be useless and for once in our favor. Then and only then, rest assured that we will claim ownership of the void, all of us, united and  finally together...
